New vs. Used Shipping Containers — Which Should You Buy?
One of the first decisions every container buyer faces is whether to buy new or used. Both have clear advantages depending on your budget, intended use, and quality requirements. This guide breaks down every grade so you can make a confident decision — and if you still are not sure, our team is always happy to help you choose.
New (One-Trip) Shipping Containers
A one-trip container is manufactured at an overseas factory, loaded with a single shipment of goods (typically consumer products, electronics, or appliances), and shipped to a US port. After that one journey, it is sold as a “one-trip” unit. Despite the name, these containers are as close to brand new as you will find in the used market.
What to Expect
- Minimal surface rust — typically just minor oxidation at welds or corners
- No significant dents or structural damage
- Clean, odor-free interior with intact bamboo or hardwood flooring
- Original factory paint in the color specified
- All seals, gaskets, and locking hardware in excellent condition
Best For
- Container homes, ADUs, and residential builds
- Container offices, studios, and workspaces
- Container cafes, bars, and retail pop-ups
- Any project where appearance matters or where modification (cutting, welding, insulation) is planned
- Food-grade or pharmaceutical storage requiring a clean, odor-free interior
Price: One-trip containers cost more upfront but require less maintenance and offer a much cleaner starting point for any build or conversion.
Used Shipping Containers — Cargo-Worthy (CW)
Cargo-Worthy containers have been used for active international shipping and have passed a formal inspection certifying them as structurally sound, weathertight, and fit for another ocean voyage. This is the highest quality category of used container.
What to Expect
- Minor to moderate surface rust — cosmetic only, does not affect performance
- Some dents and dings — normal from years of stacking and handling
- Interior is clean and weatherproof
- All doors, hinges, and seals functioning properly
- May show paint chips, fading, or branding from previous shipping lines
Best For
- Active freight and international shipping
- High-quality storage where appearance is secondary
- Conversion projects where one-trip is not strictly required
- Businesses and farms needing durable, reliable storage at a lower price than one-trip
Used Shipping Containers — Wind and Watertight (WWT)
Wind and Watertight is the most popular grade we sell. WWT containers are not certified for active international shipping, but they are structurally intact and keep weather out effectively. They are inspected to confirm there are no holes, no leaks, and that the structure is sound.
What to Expect
- More cosmetic wear than CW — dents, rust patches, faded paint are common
- No holes or leaks — interior stays dry
- Doors open, close, and lock properly
- May have more extensive surface rust but no structural compromise
- Floor may show wear but remains structurally intact
Best For
- On-site storage — construction sites, farms, warehouses, residential
- Tool, equipment, and inventory storage where appearance is not important
- Budget-conscious buyers who need reliable, weatherproof storage
- Short-term or seasonal storage applications
Price: WWT containers offer the best price-to-performance ratio for general storage. This is the grade most of our customers choose.
Used Shipping Containers — AS-IS
AS-IS containers are sold in their current condition without any inspection guarantee. They may have significant cosmetic issues, minor structural damage, or other deficiencies. We recommend AS-IS units only for buyers who understand exactly what they are getting and have a specific use in mind — such as raw steel for fabrication projects, or non-critical bulk storage where weatherproofing is not essential.
Quick Comparison
| Grade | Condition | Best Use | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-Trip (New) | Near perfect | Homes, offices, conversions, food-grade storage | Highest |
| Cargo-Worthy (CW) | Good — some cosmetic wear | Active shipping, quality storage, conversions | Mid-high |
| Wind and Watertight (WWT) | Fair — more wear, fully weatherproof | On-site storage, farms, construction sites | Mid-low |
| AS-IS | Variable — sold as found | Non-critical bulk storage, fabrication material | Lowest |
