New vs. Used Shipping Containers — Which Should You Buy?

One of the first decisions every container buyer faces is whether to buy new or used. Both have clear advantages depending on your budget, intended use, and quality requirements. This guide breaks down every grade so you can make a confident decision — and if you still are not sure, our team is always happy to help you choose.

New (One-Trip) Shipping Containers

A one-trip container is manufactured at an overseas factory, loaded with a single shipment of goods (typically consumer products, electronics, or appliances), and shipped to a US port. After that one journey, it is sold as a “one-trip” unit. Despite the name, these containers are as close to brand new as you will find in the used market.

What to Expect

Best For

Price: One-trip containers cost more upfront but require less maintenance and offer a much cleaner starting point for any build or conversion.

Used Shipping Containers — Cargo-Worthy (CW)

Cargo-Worthy containers have been used for active international shipping and have passed a formal inspection certifying them as structurally sound, weathertight, and fit for another ocean voyage. This is the highest quality category of used container.

Used Shipping Containers — Wind and Watertight (WWT)

Wind and Watertight is the most popular grade we sell. WWT containers are not certified for active international shipping, but they are structurally intact and keep weather out effectively. They are inspected to confirm there are no holes, no leaks, and that the structure is sound.

What to Expect

Best For

Price: WWT containers offer the best price-to-performance ratio for general storage. This is the grade most of our customers choose.

Used Shipping Containers — AS-IS

AS-IS containers are sold in their current condition without any inspection guarantee. They may have significant cosmetic issues, minor structural damage, or other deficiencies. We recommend AS-IS units only for buyers who understand exactly what they are getting and have a specific use in mind — such as raw steel for fabrication projects, or non-critical bulk storage where weatherproofing is not essential.
